Abraham (Abe) Kofman was born in 1903 in Brockton, Massachusetts. He married Sara Feldman Kofman (1904-1996) in 1924. They had three sons Mort, Steve, and Ken. In 1939, they moved to California and Abe became publisher of the Alameda Times-Star, which Sara helped him publish. Ten years later, he sold the paper, but he bought it back in 1960. At one time, he also published the San Leandro Morning News and the Fremont News Register. He was an active member of the Democratic Party; served as a member of the California Highway Commission; and was a past director of the California Newspaper Publishers Association. In addition, he was a member of the Alameda-Contra Costa Jewish Welfare Federations; B'nai B'rith; the Freemasons; the Shrine; the Eagles; and the Knights of Pythias. Abe passed away in 1986 at the age of 83 years old, and Sara passed away in 1996 at the age of 92.
